Dordogne cave paintings: which visit suits your group?

A replica, an original decorated cave and a museum reveal different sides of the past. Choose by your group’s interests, then plan the journey and reservation. These visits explore prehistoric art and archaeology.

What matters most to your group?

Original cave art

Start with Font-de-Gaume’s limited guided visits, checking its approach and conditions before reserving.

A flexible museum pace

Consider the museum’s self-guided collections; check opening and leave time for breaks.

Planning with younger children

Compare Lascaux IV’s visit formats and carrier rules with your children’s interests and attention span.

Fewer physical constraints

Ask Lascaux IV about individual requirements. Compare museum galleries separately from outdoor terraces; do not assume original caves are step-free.

Three ways to explore the prehistoric Dordogne

Choose one main visit. Montignac-Lascaux and Les Eyzies are different destinations; allow time for travel, parking and a pause.

Replica and interpretation centre

Lascaux IV · Montignac-Lascaux

A complete replica brings Lascaux’s cave paintings into view, with interpretive spaces afterwards. The original cave is closed for conservation; your ticket does not enter it.

Plan the visit
The operator suggests allowing two to three hours on site. Check your chosen visit, language and timed-ticket instructions before booking.
With children
Pushchairs and rigid baby carriers are not allowed; soft carriers are permitted. Arrange admission for every child and check the visit format.
Access and comfort
The operator describes an adapted route for reduced mobility. Part is outdoors; the replica is around 16°C. Discuss individual requirements directly.

Original decorated cave

Font-de-Gaume · Les Eyzies

See painted and engraved animal figures in an original cave. Limited visits help protect this fragile setting.

Plan the visit
Reserve the guided visit online. Allow around an hour on site, including approximately 30 minutes inside. Check the tour language.
With children
CMN describes the visit as suitable from seven years. This is guidance, not a promise of admission: check conditions and your group’s comfort.
Access and comfort
A steep, narrow approach of around 400 metres leads to a dark, narrow interior with no seats. The cave is around 14°C.

Museum collections

Musée national de Préhistoire · Les Eyzies

Tools, decorated objects and other archaeological evidence help explain prehistoric lives. This is a museum visit, not entry to a painted cave.

Plan the visit
Self-guided visits currently need no reservation; guided visits and workshops have separate arrangements. Check current opening and admission conditions.
With children
Choose a few objects to investigate together and take breaks. Check ages and languages for any guided activity or workshop.
Access and comfort
Galleries have lifts and ramps, with benches along the route. Terraces, archaeological areas and the castle have different paving and step constraints.

Leave room to enjoy the day

Reserve your main experience first

Choose the date, language and visit type before planning the day. Follow your ticket’s arrival instructions.

Bring a layer and check the approach

Underground temperatures differ from summer afternoons. An indoor attraction can still involve outdoor paths, slopes or waiting.

Check the visit rules

Check photography, bag and carrier rules with each venue. Opening programmes and admission conditions can change.

A prehistory day during your Monpazier stay

Maison Sérénité is in Marsalès near Monpazier, in the southern Dordogne: around a 12–15 minute walk to Monpazier’s historic northern gate, by our estimate. Plan one longer prehistory outing between quieter days here. If the Vézère dominates your holiday, compare bases first.
