Begin with the holiday you want, rather than a list of places to tick off. A market-and-vineyard week, a castle-and-river holiday and evenings in a lively town can call for different bases. Here is how we would narrow the choice.

Use this map to compare the areas. Check the driving route from your accommodation when planning each outing. Maison Sérénité is in Marsalès, near Monpazier.
Choose the setting that suits your days
01 · Dordogne
Bergerac & wine country
A good fit for
Wine visits, an old-town day and riverfront meals.
Before you choose
Choose accommodation in town if being able to walk out for dinner matters most. A countryside address has a different daily rhythm.
Shape your days around
Bergerac, Monbazillac and a reserved vineyard visit.
02 · Dordogne
Monpazier & bastide country
A good fit for
A private-house holiday with family or friends, bastide markets and quieter days.
Before you choose
Check the actual address: a home near a bastide is not necessarily inside it. A car makes wider outings more practical.
Shape your days around
Monpazier, Biron, Issigeac and separate river or wine days.
03 · Dordogne
Sarlat & the Dordogne valley
A good fit for
Medieval streets, château visits and time around the river.
Before you choose
A Sarlat address and a riverside village are different choices. Check parking and the route to your chosen visits, especially in summer.
Shape your days around
Sarlat, Beynac, Castelnaud, La Roque-Gageac and Domme.
04 · Dordogne
Les Eyzies & the Vézère valley
A good fit for
Prehistory, museum visits and the landscapes of the Vézère.
Before you choose
Reserve the particular sites you want before fixing every day. Not all prehistoric sites offer the same access or visitor experience.
Shape your days around
Les Eyzies, a selected prehistoric site and a separate village outing.
05 · Dordogne
Périgueux & the northern Dordogne
A good fit for
A town-and-countryside stay focused on the north of the department.
Before you choose
Périgueux and Brantôme are distinct places. For a northern-focused holiday, a northern base avoids repeated crossings from the south.
Shape your days around
Périgueux, Brantôme and one carefully chosen northern outing.
One base or a split stay?
For seven nights, choose the area that contains most of your must-do experiences and leave space around them. With fourteen nights, a private-house base can support a varied, unhurried holiday; a split stay may suit a group determined to explore opposite ends of the department. Compare the benefit with another packing and moving day.
Our four-bedroom house in Marsalès is a southern Dordogne base near Monpazier, with gardens and a private seasonal pool. Eight guests sleep in beds, with a separate sofa-bed room for two more. It suits a week or two of bastide life, meals together and selected outings. If your priority is to walk out of a central Sarlat apartment every evening, choose that setting instead.
